Sewage Backup: Deal With it to Preserve Your Health and Home
A flooded basement or a clogged up pipe and drainage could translate to a sewage backup problem. Taking care of ourselves and our properties is one tough job since we have invested much time, money and effort to get where we are, to feel good and to have a good house to live in. So when a sewage backup makes its presence known in our homes, nobody can blame us if our initial reaction would be to blame the pipes, the water, the contractor and anything or anybody we could think of that may have probably caused this very serious water disaster.
But finding someone to blame does not solve the problem. If you can afford it, hire a professional or expert at dealing with sewage backup situations and have that problem over and done with. However, if you so desire to tackle the job yourself in order to save costs since you already incurred a loss due to the sewage backup, then do the sewage backup remedial process yourself. Just do not take too long to decide on what you must do. Leaving the water longer than necessary inside your basement and your house is causing you a daily increment in damage and is posing a source of health hazard for you and your loved ones.
The initial procedure is to try and estimate the damage financially. After the initial assessment, acquire or rent the necessary equipment needed to draw out the sewage backup. A wet vacuum pump or any other electrical pump could be used to remove the water. Next, remove all the things inside the affected room or area. If you have a hard time removing the carpet, tear it off by using a sharp knife or sharp scissors. Roll it and take it out of the house. Continue to remove low lying water until the area is completely dry.
Clean the entire area with a brush and soapy water; you could also use rags to apply the soapy water on walls. After having soaped the affected area, rinse thoroughly with clean running water and apply the disinfectant. A disinfectant is needed in order to remove the presence of pathogenic elements or harmful microbial spores. Bleach could also be used but apply it according to the manufacturer's instructions in order to achieve optimal results.
After the disinfecting procedure comes the drying of the area. Use fans to move air flow and dehumidifiers to absorb moisture. The drying process may take up to five or more days since you have to be sure that the place has completely dried up before allowing the room to be occupied again. If it is your whole house that has been affected, it would be best if you and your family would find temporary shelter while the process of sewage backup cleaning is being done.
Do not forget to clean the items you removed from the basement or the contaminated part of the house. Have these items completely cleaned and apply disinfection as well. It is advisable to dispose items that are totally damaged by sewage backup. While restoration is a part of the sewage damage remedial procedure, you should also be able to recognize which items are beyond repair already and may only cause harm if you insist on keeping them rather than putting them away.
