Water Removal Equipment

Water removal is a diversified subject and can engulf many areas. I would like to discuss the various types of equipment used for water removal and what situation each could be used.

Sump pumps and backup pump installations; sump pumps are usually sold by the horsepower, such as quarter horsepower or one half horsepower. The size of the motor is important, but more important is the gallons that can be removed per hour.

One half horsepower can remove three to over seven thousand gallons of water per hour. These are used for flooded basements, or a pool house.

The shop vacuum is valuable piece of equipment to have when you are removing water. You are able to use this tool in many ways, efficiently. Whether the surface be tile, hardwood, carpeted, or aggregate, the shop vacuum is usually very good at pulling most of the water from the effected areas. The shop vacuum is also handy to use on wet upholstery, basements, bath areas, laundry rooms, pool houses, and even in the garage. It is easy to operate and draws a great deal of water from any effected area. It uses no bags, so all that is required is that the water be removed from the shop vacuum, then clean it with a disinfectant and allowing it to dry.

A very simple tool for water removal is a squeeze. This is a rubber tipped surface attached to a handle similar to a push broom. This tool is used on hard surfaces like the basement, sidewalk, pool side, kitchen, bath area, or garage. This simple tool can push large amounts of water out of and area leaving a minimum amount of liquid to deal with. After the proper use of this tool, a mop and a disinfectant can finish the process of water removal.

Let’s discuss the use of a mop when removing water. An industrial sized mop and self ringing bucket can be utilized in almost every aspect of water removal. In small areas where the water is localized, the mop and bucket can be your best tool. The mop quickly draws the water into its fibers, and then you ring the mop with the ringer bucket. Quite often this is the last step to many water removal processes. After removing a majority of the water, clean the bucket and mop. Then mop the area with disinfectant and water, you don‘t want future problems because the water was not treated when removal was finished.

I want to share the first tool I reach for water removal, a towel. Yes, just a simple towel. It can be very effective when drawing water from a carpet, upholstered furniture, your bedding, the bathtub overflow after the children have played jump and splash while you were laying out their night clothes.

Another tool to remove water is just as simple, I often use a few sheets of paper towels to draw small areas of moisture from small rugs, the dog feeding area, a small kitchen spill, or water that has blown through the door as it is entered.

The subject of water removal multifaceted and I have only described a few of the tools and methods of water removal. I hope this has informed you and given new insight into water removal.
